Live From The Field
I first came to Fior in 1981 while in town for a convention and on every subsequent trip to San Francisco. Then years later when I lived in Sacramento I made regular trips to eat at Fior d’ Italia.
My favoirte dish was the Fettuccini di Mama, till it was taken off the menu. Even had the chef make it few times ‘off-meu’. Since returning to Texas I have directed my son, who lives in LA to your restaurant on several occasions. He was the one who told me you had moved from your lovely spot on Washington Square. I spent many hours looking out the window at the park and the cathedral across the street while enjoying a drink and or meal.
This morning, while resarching for a book, I went on the offical website for LeRoy Neiman and was pleasantly surprised to find he created a serigraph in 2003 titled: Washington Square - San Franciso. The only place he could have seen the view he painted would have been either on the sidewalk or from a table inside Fior d’Italia!
If you are not already aware of this, take a look. I’m sure your patrons we enjoy seeing (the old view) a print of it on your walls. Here is the website URL: http://www.leroyneiman.com/merchant.ihtml?pid=582&lastcatid=4&step=4
All the best, can’t wait to eat at your new location. Robert Sadler
P.S. I have done my best to recreate what my taste buds tell me is similar to your Fettuccini di Mama, but would love to have your actual recipe. to hold me till I can be in San Franciso again.
